Bringing Your Picture Book to Life

For the past decade I have been privately working with both published and yet-to-be-published picture book writers and writer/illustrators in the areas of writing, submitting, and publishing books for children.

My mentoring is informed by my background teaching university workshops in fiction, screenwriting, and writing for children. In addition to publishing a novel and two collections of short fiction, I have now published seventeen picture books with several more on the way.

I am offering an intensive twelve week mentoring session which includes goal-setting, multiple critiques, and one-to-one online meetings. I've extensive experience working with both novice and experoienced writers intrestd in exploring a new genre. I have also advised a number of writer/illustrators. I truly love the process of working on picture books!

Mentoring Session

Manuscript Critiques

& Zoom Coaching

Within the framework of a twelve week session we

will together design a course that best fits your individual needs and goals.

  • If you already have a picture book manuscript, I will provide detailed notes  on the first draft of a the manuscript (max 1200 words) and then again on a revised draft.
  • You may not have a manuscript you are happy with, in which case you can share your notes and ideas, or even multiple manuscripts and we can start from there.
  • Suggestions will be offered with the goal of achieving a submission-ready, polished draft of your story.
  • We will discuss your goals, your submitted materials package, and your publication strategy via a half hour zoom session at the beginning, midway, and again at the end of  your twelve weeks.
  • I will also provide guidance on writing a cover letter and will read and provide a written critique.
  • Throughout the entire session, I will be available to answer your questions via email.

TESTIMONIALS

It has been an honor to have Sara as a mentor. She shared her knowledge of the industry so generously and gave a thorough, insightful critique of my picture book dummy. Sara went above and beyond to champion my work, and this led me to sign with my wonderful agent. I will forever be grateful to Sara for opening doors for me in this industry. ~Sharon Fujimoto-Johnson, author of The Mochi Makers
